Wellbeing: It’s an Ecosystem

Coach Heidi
Wellbeing is a vast ecosystem, and it’s one that all humans are a part of.

Take a moment and consider what wellbeing means to you. What words arise? Often things such as feeling energetic, being free of illness, or having access to basic necessities such as food, water, and shelter come to mind. There’s more to it than that, though, isn’t there?

Wellbeing is a vast ecosystem, and it’s one that all humans are a part of, even though many of our world’s systems are in dire need of change to achieve equal access for all. When we really dig in, most of us, in addition to good physical and mental health, want a sense of purpose or contribution, loving relationships, opportunities to learn new things, and the means to pay for the necessities that support one’s chosen lifestyle. No one person’s optimal wellbeing ecosystem is exactly the same, but there are generally considered to be eight areas that need awareness and attention. Each area stands on its own, but each aspect is also interconnected as a part of the greater wellbeing ecosystem.

The Eight Dimensions of the Wellbeing Ecosystem

VOCATION – Creating personal satisfaction and enrichment from one’s work, paid or not

PHYSICAL – Recognizing the need for physical activity, healthy foods, and sleep to support health in the physical body

SOCIAL – Developing a sense of connection to others, belonging in community, and a solid support system

EXISTENTIAL – Expanding a sense of purpose and meaning in life, and ensuring one’s actions align with one’s values and beliefs (often incorporating religion or spirituality, but not always)

EMOTIONAL – Developing healthy coping techniques and allowing all feelings (of self and of others) space and respect

ENVIRONMENTAL – Maintaining awareness and building understanding of how one’s physical, social, and cultural environments impact health

FINANCIAL – Managing one’s financial obligations in a way that is sustainable; making sound financial decisions and setting realistic goals

INTELLECTUAL – Recognizing creative abilities and finding ways to be a lifelong learner
